The New World

London: 1823

Douglas is working at a botanical garden in Glasgow when his "great activity, undaunted courage, and energetic zeal" earn him a job as a traveling plant collector for the London Horticultural Society. His first assignment takes him across the Atlantic to New York and eastern Canada. Delighted with his success, the Society sends him to the opposite side of the North American continent.
