Douglas comes of age during a time of intense interest in gardening and horticulture. Travelers abroad are bringing home all sorts of exotic life forms. Botanical gardens and societies are sponsoring plant hunters to collect new species around the globe - peonies from China, irises from Persia, orchids from South America, marigolds from the Cape of Good Hope.
